Estate sales have a way of making people move quickly. Someone else is looking at the same bracelet. There is a line behind you. You have three rooms left to explore.

Slow down.

Pick up the piece. Turn it over. Look at the back. Examine the clasp, the setting and the metal. If it is a ring, look inside the band and around the base of the setting. If it has gemstones, see how securely they are held.

Good jewelry often reveals itself in the details.

Older pieces can have scratches, surface wear or a patina from years of being worn. That does not automatically make them poor purchases. In fact, some of the wear is part of what gives vintage jewelry its character.

The bigger concern is structural damage. A worn prong, badly stretched chain or weakened ring shank could mean a repair is needed before the piece is ready for regular wear.

Look for Hallmarks Before You Look at the Price Tag

Turn the piece over.

Look for markings that indicate the metal. Gold may be marked 10K, 14K or 18K. Sterling silver is often marked 925 or Sterling. You may also find a manufacturer’s mark, designer signature or other identifying stamp.

They can also send you down an enjoyable rabbit hole. Suddenly, the bracelet you picked up because you liked the clasp has a designer’s mark you recognize. The plain-looking gold ring turns out to have an interesting history. The brooch that looked like something your grandmother might have worn starts looking considerably more interesting.

That is one of the pleasures of estate sales. There is always a little detective work involved.

Don’t Let a Sparkle Make the Decision for You

A gemstone can catch your eye from across the room. That is exactly what gemstones are supposed to do.

Still, sparkle is not a grading system.

If you are looking at a piece with what is represented as a diamond, remember that an estate sale is not a gemological laboratory. A clear stone could be a diamond, but it could also be another gemstone, glass or a diamond simulant.

Colored stones deserve the same attention. A beautiful red stone is not automatically a ruby. A green stone is not automatically an emerald. Gemstones can also have treatments, replacements and other characteristics that affect their value.

If you are considering spending serious money on an estate piece, have the jewelry examined by a professional. A few minutes of expert evaluation can tell you considerably more than trying to identify a stone under the dining room chandelier.

You find a gorgeous vintage ring for what seems like an incredible price. You buy it, bring it home and discover that the stone is loose, the prongs are worn and the ring needs to be resized.
